A major celebration in this Haitian Cultural month of May is Flag Day, Friday May 18.  With the Consulate General of Haiti in Miami, we will celebrate this important holiday at Big Night in Little Haiti with a free night of top Haitian artists.  Young konpa stars T-Vice headline the stage, along with rasin (roots) artist Sanba Zao.  The night also features an arts and crafts exhibition in the gallery, a flag presentation, activities for children and much more.

  T-Vice
T-Vice was formed by Roberto and Reynaldo Martino, sons of the legendary guitarist Robert Martino.  As young teens in the early 1990s, the brothers formed a band to play at school and parties. They received their name in homage to their father’s group Top Vice.   The band is known for catchy lyrics and the modern party vibe they bring to classic konpa rhythms.

The musical journey became a roller coaster with the release of their second album in 1995, which included a hit single.  In 1997, they won their first carnival song competition – a big deal in Haiti.  T-Vice went forward from there, reinventing itself as a 7-member group in 2005, participating annually in carnival, touring the Caribbean and the world’s great festivals and venues, becoming one of the most popular groups in Haitian music today.  T-Vice online: http://vice2k.com

  Sanba Zao
Sanba Zao (Louis Lesly Marcelin) creates music from the core elements of Haitian rasin roots.  A poet, percussionist, and mentor, he was a founding member of musical groups SA, Foula Jazz, Samba Yo and Djakata – embodying the genuine voodoo jazz genre since the 1970s.  Sanba Zao incorporates pan-African rhythms into the Haitian tradition, and infuses his work with advocacy of world peace and global purpose.  Based in Haiti, Zao serves as a cultural and spiritual godfather to many artists and musicians involved in the roots rasin movement.
